It’s that time of resolutions ..

I was never into new year resolutions and pretended they are blah and oh so lame (<imagine cool face emoji>). It does not help that the world reminds you time and again that resolutions do not last. It’s like everyone expects people who make resolutions to fail and when they do , they are ready to say “Ahaaa I told you so!”. Maybe I am growing old (a little tear falls down my cheek) or just getting wiser, but now I wonder what is wrong with something that let’s us dream and gives us hope for a better future? Whether it comes in the form of a new year resolution or a mid year goal, the thought that we are powerful and capable should be reason enough to encourage people who believe in something bigger.

What I am going to say next may come as a shock( 😉 )! Yes, I am setting goals for myself in 2016 (drumrolll pleaassee). My aim is not to achieve all of them within a certain timeframe but rather to get started on the journey towards my best self. We all are capable of so much but the voices in our head (or other peoples head about us) limit us from reaching our full potential. We are constantly reminded of what we are not rather than what we can be. Yes, I strongly and passionately believe that each one of us is special and noone(including yourself) has the right to tell us differently!

So coming back to the goals, I have a long long list (I am a Punjabi and believe in going all out or going home! 🙂 ) and wanted to share some of them with you –

Be kind to yourself– This is my number 1 goal for 2016 and many years to come. I have always been extremely hard on myself, trying to be the best in everything. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fantastic to push yourself but this kind of behavior, if applied to all aspects of your life, is extremely sabotaging to your growth. When you are constantly consumed with wanting to be perfect and anything less leads to feelings of inadequacy, you know it’s time to make a change. Let this year be the beginning of a more balanced outlook towards life.

Get the work done, in other words STOP PROCRASTINATING! – Beyonce maybe the queen of the world, but procrastination is my territory. Oh yeah, I am the queen here! I have been guilty of not returning calls or responding to messages because I am just too busy procrastinating. I delay getting started on important projects because I am waiting for that sweet moment when everything will fall in perfect place. You get the general picture! My mantra moving forward is going to be – “Done is better than perfect”.

Stop being afraid of life – Ever felt that you are capable of so many wonderful things but something stops you from taking the necessary steps? That ‘something’ for me has been the fear of things going wrong, fear of being ridiculed and mostly importantly fear of my own awesomeness, yeah that’s a legit fear- Mephobia ! 😀 I want to move beyond the word “fear” and do what my heart desires no matter how ridiculous it may sound.

Learn to drive 😀 Ok before all of you start judging me, I have some strong reasons for my inability to drive. I used to ride a scooter back in India and whenever I ventured onto the busy streets, I met with accidents. It was either in the form of a dog trying to attack me or a car hurtling towards me. True story! The poor soul (fyi me) was left scarred and terrified. But hey, this is the year of facing fears so why not face my biggest fear and become a little more independent?

I feel so excited to  wake up every morning and take baby steps towards the life I envision. Our mind is a fantastic beast capable of making or breaking us. Maybe somedays we need to tame it a little and somedays let it run wild 🙂

What are some of your resolutions/goals?
